LOVELL

“I will cross the ocean for yoou. I will go and bring you the moooon. I will be your hero, your strength, anything you neeed.” I felt like a whole bitch as I sang Phor’s favorite song to the top of my lungs after leaving her birthday dinner. A dinner that bitch ass Vick threw and asked her to marry him. I just knew she would look at me and finally see me. Finally see that I’ve been right here having her back even on the days her man was supposed to be the one right beside her.

“I will be the sun in your sky, I will light you way for all tiimes, promise you. For you I wi—”

“Lovell, if you play that damn song one more time. What is wrong with you?” Marci came downstairs to my mancave and yelled out. “It’s three in the morning and you got it sounding like a damn Monica concert down here.”

Quickly, I wiped at the pissed off tears that were starting to fill up in my eyes. A nigga heart was broken real bad. “My bad, I’ll be up in a minute.”

Just thinking about how that night made me feel, had me tossing back drink after drink. His words, Phorever, will you love me forever and do me the honor of being my wife? Was on repeat in my mind. He was right though; it was truly an honor to be with a woman like Phorever. She’s smart, beautiful, strong, loyal and ambitious. That loving side is what I fell in love with. That honor that he’s asking for is an honor that he didn’t deserve to have or to be able to call her his wife. I’ve put the work in and shown up every fucking day for her, but this nigga reaps the benefit of what I did.

I stayed up late so she could study to pass her exams. I pushed her so that she wouldn’t give up on her writing no matter how hard that shit got. It was me that talked her into getting her blueprint together so we could build that black-owned bookstore she wanted so badly on a lot that I paid for her. The same fucking bookstore that she’s about to walk away from because of his selfish ass. But that nigga won though. Some kind of way, he found a way to sneak into my mama China cabinet and take out that delicate piece that I put in there years ago.

“Where have you been?” I heard my mom's words, but that shit echoed like a muthafucka through my head.

“Stop screaming,” I groaned.

“Boy, are you slow? I’m not screaming at you. I asked where have you been because you have Phorever worried and now Vick is threatening to call off the wedding all because Phor said wasn’t shit moving around here until you showed up.”

“Aww, she said that?”

“Boy hush. Did you hear me? He’s yelling at her and threatening to call the wedding off, so you need to make this right.
